The best coastal town in Italy for your trip depends on the days you want to have. Do you picture harbour walks, sandy afternoons, cliffside views or a base for train journeys? Those are different holidays, and choosing around that preference is more useful than collecting famous names.
These ten places form a shortlist, not a single itinerary. They are spread across Liguria, Lazio, Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Sicily. Pick one region for a short break, then decide whether a nearby second base would add something worthwhile.
Ten coastal towns to consider
1. Camogli, Liguria: Colour and harbour life
Camogli’s tall, coloured waterfront buildings frame a small harbour, with pebble beaches and Dragonara Castle nearby. Choose it if your ideal afternoon involves a waterfront walk, a meal and time watching the boats. This is a place to leave room in the schedule. Before choosing a room above the seafront, check the access route and how you will carry luggage there.
2. Sestri Levante, Liguria: A town between two bays
Sestri Levante’s peninsula separates the Baia del Silenzio from the Baia delle Favole. That geography makes it an appealing option when you want a beach setting and town walks in the same stay. Look at which bay your accommodation is nearest rather than relying only on the town name. Give yourself a full day locally before adding another Ligurian stop.
3. Manarola, Liguria: Cinque Terre scenery
Manarola sits on a rocky projection above the sea, with colourful buildings and views shaped by its steep setting. Put it on your shortlist for village scenery and photographs rather than a conventional sandy-beach holiday. The church of San Lorenzo and the village viewpoints offer reasons to linger. If you want to add a walk beyond the village, check the national park’s current trail information separately.
4. Sperlonga, Lazio: White lanes and ancient history
Sperlonga brings together a whitewashed old town above the coast, narrow lanes and the distinctive Torre Truglia. The National Archaeological Museum and remains of the Villa of Tiberius give a beach trip an additional focus. Choose it when you want some history without making every day a museum day. Confirm how your accommodation connects with both the old town and the part of the beach you plan to use.
5. Positano, Campania: The cliffside setting
Positano’s houses step down towards the sea on the Amalfi Coast, linked by lanes and flights of steps. Choose it because you want that landscape to be part of your stay. Hotel position matters: compare the route from your room to transport, restaurants and the waterfront. A map distance alone does not show the effort of moving between different levels with luggage.
6. Tropea, Calabria: Beach time with a historic centre
Tropea combines a historic centre overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast with beaches below. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, set on its rocky outcrop, is a distinctive landmark. It is worth considering when you want to alternate time by the water with town walks. Look carefully at the route between your hotel and the beach, then plan a leisurely return rather than repeated trips during the day.
7. Scilla, Calabria: A waterfront neighbourhood
Scilla’s Chianalea neighbourhood has narrow lanes leading down towards the sea, with boats beside the waterfront houses. Choose it for a stay centred on that setting and unhurried meals. If you are travelling through Calabria, compare it with Tropea as a possible second base. Allow a proper transfer day if needed; being in the same region does not mean every journey is a short hop.
8. Polignano a Mare, Puglia: Cliffs and a compact centre
Polignano a Mare stands above the Adriatic, with sea-facing viewpoints and the small cove of Lama Monachile below. It is a strong choice for a town walk that keeps returning to the coast. Treat the famous cove as one part of the visit rather than your whole beach plan. Leave time for the lanes, a meal and a different viewpoint before deciding on an excursion.
9. Monopoli, Puglia: A harbour base
Monopoli’s harbour reaches into its historic centre, with old buildings along the quays and coastal fortifications nearby. Choose it if you like the idea of returning to the same neighbourhood after days exploring. Polignano and Monopoli both appear on Trenitalia’s regional route along this part of Puglia, making them a useful pair to investigate when you want to travel without hiring a car.
10. Cefalù, Sicily: Cathedral streets and a sandy shore
On Sicily’s northern coast, Cefalù combines a historic centre around its cathedral with a sandy town beach and an old fishing port. It suits a trip where cultural sights and relaxed seaside time share the day. Keep the first afternoon for the town itself. A longer Sicily itinerary should have its own transport plan rather than being treated as a quick addition to a mainland coastal break.
Choose a region before choosing hotels
For a four-to-six-night trip, a single base often gives you enough variety without frequent packing. In Liguria, compare Camogli, Sestri Levante and the Cinque Terre area according to your preferred balance of town time and excursions. Trenitalia serves the Cinque Terre villages, including Manarola; check the dated timetable and applicable ticket options for the journeys you actually want.
In Puglia, try one base with a day visiting the other town: Monopoli and Polignano make a coherent pairing to research. Review the journey from the station to your accommodation as well as the train itself. For a broader holiday built around rail travel, our Switzerland by train guide also shows how to think about bases, transfer days and time away from the timetable.
Keep the budget focused on the stay you want
Compare full stay totals for the same dates, including luggage, local transfers and the room type. Check what a beach facility or excursion actually includes instead of assuming the advertised price covers everything. Save room in the budget for one experience that matters to you, then let ordinary town days fill the rest.
Use our flights and hotels search after narrowing the region. If you choose Puglia and want time on the water, compare Polignano boat trips on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab), checking departure location, itinerary and cancellation terms. Our tours and activities page offers a starting point for other destinations.
Turn the shortlist into a manageable trip
Choose your favourite setting, check the practical journey and book a base that lets you enjoy it. If you are deciding between Italy and Greece, the four-day Santorini travel guide offers a focused island alternative. Then use the AI Trip Planner to shape a draft around your dates. Confirm its suggestions against current transport and venue information before booking. A coastal holiday needs time beside the coast, not only time moving along it.
